WE HONOR THE WILDCAT WAY! We are Kind, Always Safe and Responsible, because YOU are important!
Some schools use Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) systems to maintain appropriate behavior in their schools. We call the Wildcat Way "PBIS LIGHT" as we have our expectations posted throughout the school and we teach the children explicit ways to follow the expectations.
You will notice as you walk through our school that we have our expectations posted. You may see signs that say Recess Expectations, Hallway Expectations, Bathroom Expectations and Lunch Expectations. We also put up a sign to remind the children about the Assembly Expectations when we have assemblies. Additionally, we have signs posted throughout the school that describe who Wildcats are- respectful, creative, problem solvers, etc. We support and encourage children to be leaders in the building. We often have students ask us how they can help andwe have them do things where they can demonstrate their leadership skills. Just this week we had students helping first graders find their lunch cards, signing up for morning/afternoon patrol, helping students get to their classrooms and playing with children at recess.
The Wildcat Way expectations remind the students to be Kind, Safe and Responsible. Each sign has specific steps for the children to use like in the Bathroom- Quick, Quiet and Clean. Friday, we will have a Wildcat Way Walkabout so that the children can learn or be reminded about the expectations in actual locations, as we go through our steps. Additionally, while we promote kindness all year, in February the Kindness Campaign has a big push.
We find that this behavior system has cut down on office referrals as the children are reminded by every adult in the school to follow the Wildcat Way or to honor the Wildcat Way like our tee shirts describe. Classroom teachers and staff consistently remind the students to follow the Wildcat Way. Every morning during morning video announcements, the news crews reports to the students to remember to be Kind, Safe and Responsible because YOU are important. Every child at Windsor is important. We want the children to believe that as they hear it. Additionally, we want children to be able to put HEARTPRINTS on others. Amazon writes: In this delightful and warm board book, best-selling author-illustrator P. K. Hallinan describes the ways our actions, small and significant, can make an impression on the hearts of others-the heartprints we leave behind. Full of many examples of kindness and acts of love, this book has a lesson for us all. The bright illustrations and simple text will inspire children to look for ways to have a positive impact on those around them.
We hope that at Windsor students feel inspired to do just this!
Some parents have used the Wildcat Way to encourage positive behavior at home. We hope to do more home-school links and partnerships throughout the year around the Wildcat Way.
